This project demonstrates the implementation of a fully automated firmware deployment pipeline using GitHub Actions. The pipeline is structured to handle the complete lifecycle of firmware development, from source code compilation to testing and deployment on embedded devices. Each commit to the repository triggers the pipeline, which includes stages for building the firmware, running unit and integration tests, and deploying the validated binary to the target hardware. This approach ensures that code changes are continuously validated and deployed in a reliable and repeatable manner.
Setting up proxmox virtual machines to simulate embedded hardware for testing purposes required careful configuration. Ensuring that the build and test stages were isolated and reproducible across different environments was critical to avoid inconsistencies. Integrating deployment steps that could safely update firmware on physical devices without bricking them posed additional challenges, particularly in handling rollback scenarios in case of failed deployments.
The pipeline was designed using GitHub Actions workflows, with separate jobs for building, testing, and deploying firmware. Proxmox virtual machines were configured to emulate the target embedded hardware, allowing for comprehensive testing of the firmware in a controlled environment. The build stage compiles the source code into a binary, while the test stage runs unit and integration tests to validate functionality. The deployment stage includes safeguards to ensure that firmware updates are applied safely, with rollback mechanisms in place to revert to previous versions if necessary. Notifications and logs are integrated into the workflow to provide immediate feedback on the status of each stage.
The automated firmware deployment pipeline successfully streamlines the development and deployment process for embedded systems. Each commit triggers a series of automated checks, ensuring that only validated code is deployed to the target devices. The use of Proxmox virtual machines for testing provides a reliable environment for validating firmware functionality before deployment to an ESP32. The pipeline's design promotes best practices in CI/CD for embedded systems, enhancing code quality, reducing deployment risks, and improving overall development efficiency.
